Is Your resume Letting You Down?
There's no right or wrong way to write a resume, but some things work better than others!
There are so many different types of resumes out there and they all seem to work. Heck, sometimes
you don't even need a resume to get a job!
Nonetheless, some styles of resumes certainly work better than others. The key to making your resume
work for you is to make sure that it doesn't UNDER-SELL your skills or experience.
For example, if you write a fantastic application letter, but your resume shows you've had
a fairly mundane work history, you've probably just undone all the good work your application
letter achieved.
If you have my book Job Secrets Revealed, you'll recall that I changed
career from a restaurant manager to a sales and marketing position. I could never
have done this if my application letter had spoken about sales and marketing
skills and my resume had spoken of my experience managing a restaurant.
The two things just don't add up and consequently, makes it harder to get the job.
Similarly if you have gaps in your work history, a historical resume
may work against you. For example:
| NEC Computers: |
2001-present |
| In this position I was responsible for xxx, xxxxx x x xxx xxxx xxx xxxxx x x xxx xxxx xxx xxxxx x x xxx xxxx xxx |
| AT&T: |
1999-2000 |
| In this position I was responsible for xxx, xxxxx x x xxx xxxx xxx xxxxx x x xxx xxxx xxx xxxxx x x xxx xxxx xxx |
| Federal Express: |
1995-1997 |
| In this position I was responsible for xxx, xxxxx x x xxx xxxx xxx xxxxx x x xxx xxxx xxx xxxxx x x xxx xxxx xxx |
|
Obviously if this resume was accompanied with a letter that spoke of loyalty and
commitment to a company, the resume with the gaps in the dates raises some serious
questions and doubts.
The other way a resume can work against you is if you are trying to upgrade your
job and move into a field that pays more. Your letter may do the perfect job in
selling you to the employer but your resume can leave you out of luck if it doesn't back up what your letter says.
All this doesn't make writing a resume any harder - it simply means you have to get creative.
What I'm going to show you now are some tactics and techniques I covered in my book Job Secrets Revealed
that will show you how get creative with your resume and application.
